FA Youth Cup R1: Cambridge United U18's 2-1 AFC Sudbury U18's REVIEW

By CUFC Youth - writers for YABA

Following on from the U18's brilliant result on Friday in the quarterfinals of the Youth Alliance Cup away at Stevenage it wasn't a surprise that Jimmy Unwin picked the same starting XI for last nights game against Sudbury in the first round of the FA Youth Cup.

The starting XI features Ben Worman who recently signed a three-year professional contract at Cambridge and also captain Joe Neal was aiming to continue his fantastic form after 4 goals in his last 4 matches.

The first 20 minutes were tight and nervy with every little in the way of chances. Sudbury settled the better at the abbey creating the first opportunity but their captain Adam Hanson's shot was wide of the target. The first big chance for the U's came after 15 minutes when Joe Neal played in Sam Bennett but he couldn't get his shot away.

During the next 20 minutes the U's and Sudbury continued to exchange chances, the first chance in this period fell to Lewis Simper only for his shot to be superbly blocked by Sudbury player Liam Bennett. Sudbury's other full-back Ross Crane then went close at the other end hitting the crossbar with a strike from outside the area. Joe Neal then had a shot on target from outside the box only for his shot to be saved by Sudbury goalkeeper Charlie McCarthy.

Towards the end of the half, the U's kept pushing for the opener with Ben Worman going close with a strike only for it to be deflected behind for a corner. From the resulting corner, Lewis Simper delivered a brilliant cross only just missing a flying Charlie Johnson up from the back. The first half finished 0-0 in the FA Youth Cup with the U's creating the better of the chances at the end of the half.

The second half started as the first half finished with the U's on top. The first chance of the second half fell to Jake Battersby but it was blocked by a Sudbury defender, the ball then fell to Ben Worman who forced another brilliant save out of Sudbury keeper Charlie McCarthy. A minute later Sudbury went up the other end and forced a brilliant save out of U's keeper Craig Foxall, this would prove to be an assist as the U's went up the other end and scored. What a goal it was, Ben Worman got the ball onto his left foot and hit it into the top corner from 30 yards out to make it 1-0.

After Ben Worman's brilliant strike he was then to have the next chance in the game but his shot was saved and then from the resulting corner the U's had 3 attempts on goal but failed to score with Thomas Dickens blasting the last of the 3 wide. Lewis Simper whose corners were very impressive all evening continued to cause the Sudbury defence trouble with Sam Goode getting on the end of this one but heading wide.

Sudbury then had their best spell of the match with a free kick on the edge of the area being deflected wide for a goal kick. Then Craig Foxall then produced his second fantastic save of the evening this time denying Oliver Grevett, the run and shot were both to be admired by the Sudbury player. This was then followed by Jimmy making his first change of the evening bring Blake D'Arcy off and bring Joe Dearman on in his place.

The U's then doubled their lead in the 82nd minute when a lucky break fell to Sam Bennett who smartly lifted the ball over the out rushing Sudbury keeper to make it 2-0 to the U's. Sam Bennett was then replaced by Diego Miller for the second change of the evening for the U's. The U's were looking comfortable seeing out their 2-0 lead but then conceded a penalty in added time after a push in the penalty area. The penalty was taken by Issac Skubich and he sent Craig Fixall the wrong way to make it 2-1 to Cambridge. That was the last action of the game and it finished 2-1 to the U's. They will now play Yeovil away at Huish Park- the date is yet to be announced.

A brilliant match at the Abbey yesterday evening with the U's coming out on top. Congratulations to Jimmy and his team. They are back in action Saturday against Leyton Orient in a home match at Clare College. Attendance 215.
