TRANSFER WOES AND WAHEYYY'S

By Steven Doggett - writer for YABA

Every moment there is less and less time of the January transfer window left! You heard that right! Within a blink of the eye, we have already broken all of our new year's resolutions and it is now unacceptable to listen to Christmas music for another 10 months.

The January window so far...

So far we have seen two loanee arrivals in the form of Adam Phillips (20) from Norwich City until the end of the season and Billy Waters (23) from Northampton also until the end of the season. Fans have had the uplift of seeing Barry Corr resign on a contract too, that will last until the end of the month. He made a substitute appearance in the last U's match against Forest Green.

So far both Corr and Waters have made very positive starts for the U’s and have been praised by both head coach Shaun Derry as well as the fans. This is good news for the U’s who have struggled for goals this season. With the two new strikers brought in by Mr Shaun Derry, they are sure to bring exciting and prosperous plays to the team for the last few months of the season.

George Taft has also joined the U's. A lot of fans on Twitter urged Taft to return as he has definitely entered the hearts of many U’s fans young and old. We have also seen Manny Osadebe loaned out to Newport until the end of this season

So what does that mean for future signings in this window?

Well, if we take the most recent 5-2 defeat to 23rd place Forest Green as an example, as well as the injury to Leon Legge we could be in the market for a new defender to bulk up the squad we already have. We also know that Uche Ikpeazu has not signed a new contract thus far, so we could also be in the market for yet another striker. A full transfer rather than a loanee.

So who would we sign and from where? Well, a good signing could come from Yeovil and Nathan Smith. He's a CB who has played 27 games for The Glovers so far this season and over 130 games for the club in total scoring 3 goals. The 31-year-old has also had two call-ups for the Jamaican national team. Smith (31) has a lot of good traits, including speed and strength which could very much bolster the defence for the U's who have twice conceded five or more goals this season. It will also give Derry more options across the backline as Nathan Smith can also play on the left side of the defence.

The budget

Shaun Derry has stated before in his post-match interviews that in this transfer window we will be in the market for new players to strengthen up the squad and be able to increase the size of the squad too. But what shape is our budget in for these new signings? Well…Fortunately, in the last few years, we have taken one of the biggest teams in England head to head over 180 minutes of football. 90 at The Abbey and 90 at the home of the Red Devils, making an incredible amount of money and memories. We have also gone toe to toe with one of the best-followed clubs in the championship, Leeds United, which has seen a surplus of money taken into the club.

Including these two amazing feats, we have been told by Jez George that United are expected to make £1 million profit after seeing other financial aspects rise 70% over the last few years. As well as this Jez also disclosed that we have made an extra £150,000 from investors over the past calendar year.

Conclusion

There may only be a couple days left of this transfer window but we could and need to find a few good picks in the time we have left in order to improve our options in the squad. Not just in the starting XI but when looking across on the bench you need players that will make a difference in games. Deadline day... needs to be a busy one at the Abbey!
