PRE-MATCH STATS: Climbing Cambridge United vs Groggy Grimsby Town

By Steven Doggett - STATMAN for YABA

The U’s are back on home soil for the 3rd time this year and welcome Grimsby to The Abbey. I look ahead to the match and give you all the key stats.

Form Guide

Both teams have struggled in recent times and firstly we will dissect our visiting
opponents. Grimsby will make the long 5 hours 40-minute return trip to The
Abbey with what could very well be a subdued and lack-lustre travelling party.
Fans cannot be moaned at for expecting another performance similar to those
that have seen them winless in 12. No team in the football league has picked up
less points than Grimsby over the last 10 games accumulating just 3 points in that
time.

Another worrying fact for the Mariners is that they have only scored 4 goals
in the last 10 games which is the joint worst in the football league, on par with
Championship side Nottingham. To add to the nightmare that is Grimsby football
club they have also conceded the most goals in their last 10 league 2 games
and are 4th from bottom of goals conceded in the football league over the past
10.

Grimsby’s last win away from home came against bottom club Barnet, all the
way back on the 25th of November last year and have since shifted 11 goals
in their last 6 games away from home.

Grimsby now sit 9 points from the drop but worryingly with their bad form and
every club below them having at least 1 game in hand their stay in the football
league could be coming to an end.

Cambridge, however, could be rising under Dunne after that late, late winner,
over league strugglers Chesterfield midweek scoring in the 90+5 minute.
There were more positives for the U’s other than a win against a side that would
be lucky to stay in the football league in that they had managed to get their 1st
away win since September, they are no longer the lowest scoring club in
league 2 and Uche is back on the score sheet, as well as managing
to collect a much-needed victory after 6 without one.

Cambridge still need to show progress as they have scored 6 in their last 7
games while conceding 12 with big players still injured and the departure of
head coach Shaun Derry it’ll be a hard and trying time for players and fans.

Head 2 Head Stats

Grimsby does like a game or 2 against Cambridge. Spanning back to 2004
they have played each other 13 times over both league 2 and National league.
Grimsby has managed to win 7 of these meetings whereas Cambridge has
managed to win only 2 with 4 ending up as draws.

You would have to go back to 2013 for the last time United has beaten Grimsby
in the league with the only win at the Abbey against the Mariners came in the
form of the FA trophy semi final match in 2014 with 2 goals from Bird with that
match ending 2-1 to the U’s.

Dunne has shown great managerial qualities in his interviews thus far and has got
the best out of his players. Fighting right to the death on Tuesday night
demonstrated just that. Can United perform again against a Grimsby side that I
am not sure can see a light at the end of their grim looking tunnel? We will find out.

Up the U’s!
