CUFC Youth Update: Under 18's Academy weekly review

Cambridge Independent

Welcome to the first update for the Under 18’s this season. A new segment for the YABA Blog in our new and exciting partnership with YABA.

The season started at home (at Newmarket) against Wimbledon with a 1-0 win with Ben Worman scoring the winner. Ben Worman has since signed his first professional contract with the U’s.

Their next game was against an away trip to Northampton which they lost 2-1 with Sam Bennett scoring the U’s goal from the penalty spot. This was unfortunate as the coaches were pleased with the chances created but they just couldn’t convert the chances.

The next game was away at Gillingham with the U’s losing 3-2 in an entraining game, Sam Bennett scored again for the U’s with a 40-yard own goal the other one for the U’s. The coaching staff were pleased with the level of performance again in this game, unfortunately, the result wasn’t positive!

The next match was another home game at Newmarket against Luton Town. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in a game which saw 5 yellow cards and one red card for the Luton Kepler late in the game. Again Sam Bennett scoring for the U’s.

After playing Luton in the league, the Under 18’s played against Luton away from in the league cup, Luton won this competition last season. The U’s ran out 4-1 winners in an impressive display against the holders with Sam Bennett scoring a hat trick and a goal from Jake Battersby. The reward for this brilliant display is an away game at Barnet in the last 16.

After their cup heroics, the Under 18’s returned to the league against Leyton Orient. The under 18’s won 4-2 in a superb performance, with two goals from Sam Bennett and two from trialist Sonny Carey.

The under 18’s next game was another away game this time at Southend in which they lost 3-2 to high flying Southend. They weren’t helped with some interesting refereeing decisions especially the decision to give Lewis Simper a red card after two dubious yellow cards. Tom Dickens scores his first of the season and Sam Bennett continued his brilliant goal scoring form.

The under 18’s cup adventure continued this week with their last 16 tie away at Barnet. After going into halftime leading through Charlie Johnson’s header they were pegged back in the second half. The match goes straight to penalties after 90 minutes. The under 18’s had obviously been watching England in the summer and won on penalties to progress to the quarter-final of the league cup.

We hope you have enjoyed the update on the Under 18’s and we will continue to update our Twitter account CUFCYouth with the latest news.
