CUFC Youth Update: Under 18's monthly review, plus Under 15's vs Manchester United preview!

Welcome to the 2nd youth team update of the season.

Following their brilliant win on penalties in the Round of 16, the Under 18’s have got an away game against Stevenage, on Friday 26th October 2018 and it will be a midday kick off in the quarter-final of the league cup.

Saturday 15th September the Under 18’s travelled to MK Dons’ training ground for a league match. The U’s didn’t get off to the best start going a goal behind but they turned it around and won the game 2-1. The goals were scored by Lewis Simper and unsurprisingly Sam Bennett added to his tally for the season. Both goals were assisted by Jake Battersby the left wing back.

The under 18’s didn’t have a midweek fixture ( w/c Mon 17th) and this allowed them time to prepare for the derby against Peterborough on Saturday.

Derby day - 22nd September at home against Peterborough. A tough first half saw the Under 18’s go into halftime trailing 1-0 to Peterborough. The second half was a positive performance from the Under 18’s and saw them draw level with a stupendous free-kick from Joe Neal (which unsurprisingly was nominated for goal of the month for September - a link will be added to the twitter page). The game ended in a 1-1 draw which was a fair result for both sides with the highlight being Joe’s stunning free kick.

Next up was another game away at The Hive for a fixture against Barnet for the second time in a month. At halftime the game was a close encounter with the score remaining 0-0 going into halftime. Unfortunately, the Under 18’s 3rd game unbeaten run was ended as in the second half Barnet scored 3 times with the U’s only able to muster a single goal from Joe Neal - who made it 2 in 2.

After losing away at Barnet on the first weekend in October the Under 18’s were looking to bounce back to winning ways with a match against Stevenage at Clare College. The match ended disappointingly in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Stevenage. Joe Neal made it 3 in 3 with his goal. Although the under 18’s lots they had a large percentage of the ball and created a large number of chances. The Under 18’s will have a chance to right the wrongs against the same opposition at the end of the month in the League Cup quarter-final away at Stevenage.

The last match to update you on this month was a friendly for the first year scholars (Under 17’s) against premiership opposition Leicester City. This match was to get the younger scholars some match time and to test themselves against Premiership opposition, the match ended in a 5-0 defeat but was a good match for the Under 17’s to be involved In.

On Saturday 13th October one of the youth team stars of this season Ben Worman was rewarded for this good start to the season being added to the squad for the first teams match against MK Dons. Congratulations to Ben for his call-up to the first team squad.

During the remainder of October, there is a lot to look forward to for the Cambridge United Youth Teams - as mentioned above the Under 18’s have their quarter-final against Stevenage. Also the Under 15’s have a match against Manchester United at the Abbey Under the lights on Wednesday 24th October - this is a fantastic opportunity for United fans to see our promising youngsters against top-class opposition in Manchester United.

The FA Youth Cup draw has been made this week and you may have seen that the Under 18’s got a home draw against Sudbury. The date is yet to be decided.
